Chatham-Kent Secondary School hosted their annual Chatham-Kent Junior Badminton Invitational Wednesday evening, welcoming schools from across the board.

Koopmans Named Redeemer Athlete of the Year

Chatham’s Janelle Koopmans was named the Redeemer College Female Athlete of the Year this week for her athletic accomplishments this season.

Koopmans won OCAA provincial badminton bronze with her partner and co-recipient of the Female Athlete of the Year award, Katherine Harvey.

The team won a C flight championship, B flight championship, and ultimately the OCAA bronze this season.

Koopmans is a graduate of Chatham Christian High School.

Wallaceburg’s Taylor Kraayenbrink and Chatham’s Julie Koopmans were also honoured during the evening as the cross country male and female MVPs.

JMSS Wins Two Divisions in Season Opening Badminton Tournament

The John McGregor Panthers Senior badminton team had an impressive opening to their 2013 season, winning two divisions at the annual Chatham-Kent Secondary School Senior Badminton Tournament.

Brandon Jenner and Drew Gifford captured the boys doubles title for JMSS, while Sarah Carlton and Bridget Carlton won girls doubles.

Pain Court Cleans Up Home Badminton Tournaments

The ESPC Patriotes hosted their annual Junior and Senior badminton tournament’s Friday and Saturday.

In the Junior tournament, Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Lee Kucera and Julie Earle won their third consecutive tournament in the mixed doubles division, defeating Danielle Lucier and Devante Kentebe of UCC in the final.

Pain Court’s Macy Pinsonneault won the girls singles crown, while fellow ESPC competitors Isaac Pinsonneault and Ben Bruhlman (boys doubles) and Jule Houle and Madeleine Myers (girls doubles) also won their respective divisions.

In the senior tournament, Andre Pinsonneault of ESPC defeated CKSS’ Brad Hockin in the boys single final. Sheridan Rogers of UCC took the girls singles crown as the only other Chatham-Kent champion at the senior level.

CKSS Takes Two Divisions at Final Tune Up Before Kent

Chatham-Kent Secondary School won two divisions at the final Junior Badminton Tournament leading up to the Kent final Wednesday night held at Chatham Christian.

CKSS’ Lee Kucera and Julie Earle won their fourth consecutive tournament of the season capturing the mixed double title, while Pierce Johnson and Josh Roy won their first tournament of the year in the boys doubles division. Kent will be held next Thursday at Ridgetown. Below at the winners and finalists from each division.

Patriotes Win Kent Senior Badminton Title

The Pain Court (ESPC) Patriotes captured the team title Tuesday, at the Kent Senior Badminton Championships in Dresden. Pain Court topped all teams finishing with 34 points, while UCC was second with 32.5 points, and CKSS was third with 30.5.

Individually, the top three finishers in each division from Tuesday’s Kent final will advance to the SWOSSAA Championships next Tuesday in Leamington, where they’ll battle for a chance to play at the OFSAA championships May 2-4 in Pain Court.

In boys singles, Andre Pinsonneault of Pain Court captured the title, defeating Brad Hockin of Chatham-Kent Secondary School 21-18, 21-8.

The girls singles crown was won by Chatham Christian’ Alyson Bierling. Bierling defeated Michelle Truong of UCC in three games, 13-21, 21-13, 21-17.

Pain Court also won the boys doubles final, with Kaylobe Derynck and Avery Speller beating John McGregor’s Brandon Jenner and Drew Gifford 21-15, 21-10.

Girls Doubles was another Pain Court division as Cassandra Faubert and Emily Pepper beat Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Holly Stokes and Kristen Marti 21-18, 21-13 in the final.

Chris Hoy and Natalie Squazzin of UCC grabbed their school’s only division title, winning mixed doubles. The duo narrowly defeated CKSS’ Chris Bechard and Alyssa Chacon.

Ridgetown will host the Kent Junior Badminton championships this Thursday beginning at 9am.


Kucera, Earle Continue Perfect Season at Kent

Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Lee Kucera and Julie Earle completed their perfect season in Mixed Doubles Junior Badminton, winning their fifth consecutive tournament, and capturing the Kent Junior Championship.

The duo walked through Thursday’s competition in Ridgetown, not dropping a game during their impressive win, including against UCC in the final.

ESPC took home the overall team title, as they did earlier in the week at the Senior level. The top three finishers in each division will move on to the SWOSSAA finals next Thursday in Leamington. Below are the final results from Thursday’s Kent Championships.

Earle, Kucera Complete Perfect Season

Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Lee Kucera and Julie Earle captured the SWOSSAA Junior Badminton Mixed Doubles championship Thursday in Leamington, completing their perfect season.

The CKSS Golden Hawks duo faced their toughest competition of the season, defeating WECSSAA champions Amy Liu and Andi Wang four straight games in the finals, to capture the SWOSSAA title.

Earle and Kucera won six tournaments in total this season, including SWOSSAA and KCSSAA, as well as locally hosted tournaments at CKSS, Pain Court, Chatham Christian, and John McGregor.

Pain Court’s Isaac Pinsonneault and Ben Bruhlman finished second in men’s doubles, while Julia Houle and Madeleine Myers, also of Pain Court, came in third in women’s doubles, and Macy Pinsonneault of Pain Court was third in men’s singles.

There is no OFSAA championship at the Junior level. Pain Court will host Senior OFSAA from May 2-4.

Four Schools Take Kent Badminton Titles

Tuesday at the St. Clair Health Plex in Chatham, the Kent Senior Badminton finals were held, with champions from four different Chatham-Kent high schools being crowned.

Andre Pinsonneault of Pain Court won his second straight Boys Singles title, defeating Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Christian Bechard in straight games.

In girls singles, UCC’s Sheridan Rodgers captured the Kent title, beating Alyson Bierling, who attends Chatham Christian.

Taking the boys doubles title was Brad Hockin and Rick An from CKSS. After each playing singles last year, the duo came together and grabbed the doubles crown. They needed three games to edge Chatham Christian’s Cam Koomans and Peter Sung.

In girls doubles, John McGregor’s Bridget Carleton and Ashley Herfst beat Pain Court’s Madeleine Myers and Danielle Lucier.

Finally, Alec Hoy and Michelle Truong Ursuline College beat CKSS’ Lee Kucera and Julie Earle in the mixed doubles final. Kucera and Earle were last year’s Junior SWOSSAA champions.

The UCC Lancers took the overall team title.

CKSS Wins Kent Junior Badminton

Chatham-Kent Secondary School captured the overall team title at the 2014 Kent Junior Badminton Championships Thursday at the St. Clair Health Plex in Chatham, Ontario.

The CKSS Golden Hawks won two divisions, boys doubles and girls singles, and had an entry in each division advance to SWOSSAA.

Eve Stokes won her fourth tournament of the season in girls singles, defeating Kayla Tremblay of Pain Court in straight games in the final.

In boys doubles, Pierce Johnson and Josh Roy also won their fourth tournament of the year, beating UCC’s Kyle Hachey and Ben Bain in the final.

Overall, CKSS totalled 43.5 points, ahead of Pain Court, who finished second with 32.5.

In the boys singles final, ESPC’s Mitchell Ben was dominant from start to finish on the day, defeating Chatham Christian’s Jarrod Kloostra in the final.

In mixed doubles, Page Moffatt and Brant Bagnell, who were the top ranked mixed doubles team entering Kent, swept CKSS’ Brooke MacKinnon and Jordan DeHaw in the final.

Finally, in girls doubles, John McGregor’s Darby Barnard and Taylor Kewley knocked out UCC’s Kiara VanBommel and Grace Hiltz for the doubles title.

The top three finishers in each division will advance to SWOSSAA next Thursday, April 24, which will also be held at the St. Clair Health Plex.

Kent Badminton Qualifiers Headed To OFSAA

John McGregor’s Bridget Carleton and Ashley Herfst, and ESPC’s Andre Pinsonneault are headed to OFSAA after winning SWOSSAA badminton on Tuesday.

In boys singles, Pain Court’s Andre Pinsonneault captured the SWOSSAA title, one week after winning the Kent crown.

“The feeling was unbelievable,” said Andre Pinsonneault. “I had been waiting for that moment for a long time, and as for OFSAA, I’m just glad to be going.”

Pinsonneault defeated the LSSAA champion Luke Van Reenen from Sarnia St. Clair in dominating fashion, 21-4, 21-14. The duo were followed by Kent runner up, Christian Bechard of Chatham-Kent Secondary School who was third.

Carleton and Herfst, representing John McGregor Secondary School, won the girls doubles final over Windsor Massey in a three game thriller, capped by a 21-11 victory in the final game. The duo, who won Kent last week, are both in grade 11 at JMSS.

“Winning SWOSSAA was amazing, a dream come true,” said Herfst.

“There was some great competition there and it was not an easy win. We had many very close games,” added Carleton about the SWOSSAA victory..

When asked about their chances at OFSAA, the duo just hope to do their best, and soak in the experience.

“We hope to play to the best of our ability and put our hearts into every match,” stated Herfst. “All in all, I’m sure it will be an awesome experience that I will never forget.”

“For OFSAA, Ashley and I hope to play the best we can,” continued Carleton. “We aren’t sure what to expect but we think we have potential to do well if we play our best. It should be a fun experience.”

Both athletes are multi-sport threats at JMSS, as Carleton is an accomplished basketball player, while Herfst also has Kent tennis titles on her resume.

The trio of Chatham-Kent athletes will travel to Markham from May 1-3 for OFSAA.

Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Lee Kucera and Julie Earle captured the SWOSSAA Junior Badminton Mixed Doubles championship Thursday in Leamington, completing their perfect season.

The CKSS Golden Hawks duo faced their toughest competition of the season, defeating WECSSAA champions Amy Liu and Andi Wang four straight games in the finals, to capture the SWOSSAA title.

Earle and Kucera won six tournaments in total this season, including SWOSSAA and KCSSAA, as well as locally hosted tournaments at CKSS, Pain Court, Chatham Christian, and John McGregor.

Pain Court’s Isaac Pinsonneault and Ben Bruhlman finished second in men’s doubles, while Julia Houle and Madeleine Myers, also of Pain Court, came in third in women’s doubles, and Macy Pinsonneault of Pain Court was third in men’s singles.

There is no OFSAA championship at the Junior level. Pain Court will host Senior OFSAA from May 2-4.
