Four Schools Take Kent Badminton Titles

Tuesday at the St. Clair Health Plex in Chatham, the Kent Senior Badminton finals were held, with champions from four different Chatham-Kent high schools being crowned.

Andre Pinsonneault of Pain Court won his second straight Boys Singles title, defeating Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Christian Bechard in straight games.

In girls singles, UCC’s Sheridan Rodgers captured the Kent title, beating Alyson Bierling, who attends Chatham Christian.

Taking the boys doubles title was Brad Hockin and Rick An from CKSS. After each playing singles last year, the duo came together and grabbed the doubles crown. They needed three games to edge Chatham Christian’s Cam Koomans and Peter Sung.

In girls doubles, John McGregor’s Bridget Carleton and Ashley Herfst beat Pain Court’s Madeleine Myers and Danielle Lucier.

Finally, Alec Hoy and Michelle Truong Ursuline College beat CKSS’ Lee Kucera and Julie Earle in the mixed doubles final. Kucera and Earle were last year’s Junior SWOSSAA champions.

The UCC Lancers took the overall team title.

Chatham-Kent Secondary School captured the overall team title at the 2014 Kent Junior Badminton Championships Thursday at the St. Clair Health Plex in Chatham, Ontario.

The CKSS Golden Hawks won two divisions, boys doubles and girls singles, and had an entry in each division advance to SWOSSAA.

Eve Stokes won her fourth tournament of the season in girls singles, defeating Kayla Tremblay of Pain Court in straight games in the final.

In boys doubles, Pierce Johnson and Josh Roy also won their fourth tournament of the year, beating UCC’s Kyle Hachey and Ben Bain in the final.

Overall, CKSS totalled 43.5 points, ahead of Pain Court, who finished second with 32.5.

In the boys singles final, ESPC’s Mitchell Ben was dominant from start to finish on the day, defeating Chatham Christian’s Jarrod Kloostra in the final.

In mixed doubles, Page Moffatt and Brant Bagnell, who were the top ranked mixed doubles team entering Kent, swept CKSS’ Brooke MacKinnon and Jordan DeHaw in the final.

Finally, in girls doubles, John McGregor’s Darby Barnard and Taylor Kewley knocked out UCC’s Kiara VanBommel and Grace Hiltz for the doubles title.

The top three finishers in each division will advance to SWOSSAA next Thursday, April 24, which will also be held at the St. Clair Health Plex.

Kent Badminton Qualifiers Headed To OFSAA

John McGregor’s Bridget Carleton and Ashley Herfst, and ESPC’s Andre Pinsonneault are headed to OFSAA after winning SWOSSAA badminton on Tuesday.

In boys singles, Pain Court’s Andre Pinsonneault captured the SWOSSAA title, one week after winning the Kent crown.

“The feeling was unbelievable,” said Andre Pinsonneault. “I had been waiting for that moment for a long time, and as for OFSAA, I’m just glad to be going.”

Pinsonneault defeated the LSSAA champion Luke Van Reenen from Sarnia St. Clair in dominating fashion, 21-4, 21-14. The duo were followed by Kent runner up, Christian Bechard of Chatham-Kent Secondary School who was third.

Carleton and Herfst, representing John McGregor Secondary School, won the girls doubles final over Windsor Massey in a three game thriller, capped by a 21-11 victory in the final game. The duo, who won Kent last week, are both in grade 11 at JMSS.

“Winning SWOSSAA was amazing, a dream come true,” said Herfst.

“There was some great competition there and it was not an easy win. We had many very close games,” added Carleton about the SWOSSAA victory..

When asked about their chances at OFSAA, the duo just hope to do their best, and soak in the experience.

“We hope to play to the best of our ability and put our hearts into every match,” stated Herfst. “All in all, I’m sure it will be an awesome experience that I will never forget.”

“For OFSAA, Ashley and I hope to play the best we can,” continued Carleton. “We aren’t sure what to expect but we think we have potential to do well if we play our best. It should be a fun experience.”

Both athletes are multi-sport threats at JMSS, as Carleton is an accomplished basketball player, while Herfst also has Kent tennis titles on her resume.

The trio of Chatham-Kent athletes will travel to Markham from May 1-3 for OFSAA.

CKSS Hosts Badminton Tournaments

The Senior and Junior Badminton seasons are underway, with tournaments running across Chatham-Kent. Over the last two nights, Chatham-Kent Secondary School hosted their Junior and Senior badminton tournaments.

Wednesday in the senior tournament, CKSS’ Christian Bechard fell to Henry Andkilde of Tecumseh Vista in the boys singles final.

In the boys doubles division Isaac Pinsonneault and Ben Bruhlman of Pain Court defeated CKSS’ Drew Medd and Jim Hong in the final.

In girls doubles, UCC’s Julia Moretto and Sydney Authier defeated Chatham-Kent Secondary School Junior players Sydney Sabourin and Jade Barko, who were playing up the age group. Sabourin and Barko would again capture second the following night at the Junior tournament falling to JMSS.

UCC’s Sheridan Rogers was second in girls singles, falling to Kestrel McNeill of Belle River in the final.

In mixed doubles, CKSS’ Lee Kucera and Julie Earle defeated UCC’s Laura Wiersma and Derek Vanhieuwenhuyze to capture the championship.

In the Junior tournament the following night, the host CKSS Golden Hawks had a strong showing with Jordan DeHaw winning boys singles, Brooke MacKinnon and Carson Lewis capturing the mixed doubles title, and Tess Scaman in girls singles, as well as the duo of Barko and Sabourin each taking second.

Local teams are back in action in Pain Court Friday and Saturday for Junior and Senior Tournaments respectively.

LKSSAA South Badminton Wraps Up

BadmintonThe LKSSAA South badminton championships took place Tuesday at the St. Clair College HealthPlex in Chatham. The top six finishers in each division would qualify for next week’s LKSSAA championships, which will also be hosted at the HealthPlex on April 14.

Christian Bechard of Chatham-Kent Secondary School captured the boys singles title, defeating Pain Court’s Macy Pinsonneault in the final.

UCC’s Seridan Rogers was the girls singles champion, defeating Pain Courts Danielle Lucier.

In the girls doubles division, Bridget Carleton and Ashley Herfst, a duo that qualified for OFSAA last season, took the South crown beating UCC’s Andrea Colasanti and Jadeyn Martin in the finals.

Isaac Pinsonneault and Ben Bruhlman of Pain Court (ESPC) defeated CKSS’ Drew Medd and Jim Hong in the final to win boys doubles.

Finally, Lee Kucera and Julie Earle of CKSS were the mixed doubles winners, beating Derek Vannieuwenhuyze and Laura Wiersma from UCC in the final.

The LKSSAA South Junior tournament will be held Thursday at the St. Clair Health Plex.

CKSS Repeats As LKSSAA South Junior Champs

CKSS finished the day with 52 points, followed by ESPC with 36 and UCC with 27.

Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Jordan DeHaw beat teammate Grant Spence in the boys singles final.

Carson Lewis and Brooke MacKinnon ousted UCC’s Jacob Wanger and Grace Hiltz in the mixed doubles final.

Emma Demers of UCC beat CKSS’ Tess Scaman for the girls singles crown.

In girls doubles, Chatham Christian’s team won the title, edging CKSS’ Jade Barko and Shayna Daly.

Finally, ESPC’s Nick Paraskavapolous and Remi Myers defeated teammates Cody Henderson and Joseph Zarebski in the boys doubles finals.

The top 6 from each division will advance to face the top 6 from the LKSSAA North tournament next week in Sarnia for the LKSSAA championships.

Local Athletes Sweep LKSSAA Badminton

The best high school badminton players from Lambton and Kent squared off Tuesday at the St. Clair Health Plex in Chatham for the LKSSAA Senior Badminton Champions.

At day’s end, only Chatham-Kent athletes were wearing championship medals around their necks, including ESPC, who took the overall team title, followed closely by CKSS.

Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Julie Earle and Lee Kucera won their fourth tournament of the season, sweeping Sarnia St. Clair in the final 21-13, 21-15. Kucera and Earle have been playing together since grade 10 when their won the SWOSSAA championship.

Pain Court’s Ben Bruhlman and Isaac Pinsonneault easily took the boys doubles final 21-13, 21-11, beating Sarnia Northern duo Afridee Haque and Geoff Spielman.

In girls doubles, John McGregor’s Ashley Herfst and Bridget Carleton, who qualified for OFSAA last season, won the LKSSAA title defeating another local duo, Madeleine Myers and Julia Houle of Pain Court 21-19, 21-15.

In the single’s matches, Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Christian Bechard defeated Pain Court’s Macy Pinsonneault 21-18, 21-15 in the LKSSAA final, while UCC’s Sheridan Rogers took the women’s final defeating Pain Court’s Danielle Lucier.

The top six in each division will travel to SWOSSAA next week in Leamington.

Hawks Win LKSSAA Junior Badminton Title

imageAfter winning the Kent championship last year, the Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks won the first ever LKSSAA Junior Badminton team title Monday at St. Francois Xavier in Sarnia, Ontario.

Jordan DeHaw won the boys singles crown in a tightly contested all CKSS final, edging out grade 9 Grant Spence. Baoyi Zhang of Sarnia Northern was third.

In mixed doubles, Jacob Wanger and Grace Hiltz of UCC got their revenge from the LKSSAA South final, as they beat CKSS’ Carson Lewis and Brooke MacKinnon. ESPC’s Melissa Gaudrault and Cedric Duboi-Neron were third.

The boys doubles final featured an all Pain Court cast as Nick Paraskavopoulos and Ethan Provencal defeated schoolmates Cody Henderson and Joseph Zarebski in the final. North Lambton’s Trenton Straatman and Callum Rollings finished third.

In the girls doubles final, North Lambton’s Casey Gallant and Alexis McCreath-Frangakis edged ESPC’s Angela Rolph and Elise Pinsonneault in a 6 game thriller.

Finally, the girls singles title was won by LCCVI’s Marissa Mueller. She defeated UCC’s Emma Demers in the final, while CKSS’ Tess Scaman was third.

The top six in each division will advance to the SWOSSAA Championships in Leamington on Thursday.

OFSAA For CKSS Badminton Athletes

A trio of Chatham-Kent Secondary School Golden Hawks badminton players have qualified for the 2015 OFSAA badminton championships.

The 2015 event, which will be held in Markham, Ontario, will feature the best senior badminton players from across Ontario.

CKSS’ Lee Kucera and Julie Earle advanced after winning the SWOSSAA Badminton Championships held in Leamington on Tuesday.

The mixed doubles pair were the LKSSAA and SWOSSAA champions, having played together since grade 10 when they also won SWOSSAA.

Tuesday at SWOSSAA, Kucera and Earle went undefeated, including a finals win against Leamington’s Agatha and Frank Driedger 21-14, 21-14.

Christian Bechard was the third Chatham-Kent participant to advance, finishing second in the boys singles final. Bechard lost a close final to Tecumseh Vista’s Henry Andkilde 24-22, 21-17.

OFSAA will take place from April 30 to May 2 at the Atos Markham Pan Am Centre, the nearly constructed facility which will play host to the 2015 Pam Am Games Badminton Championships.

Chatham-Kent Secondary School badminton players Lee Kucera and Julie Earle, and Christian Bechard, all had winning records at the 2015 OFSAA Badminton Championships in Markham this weekend.

Lee Kucera and Julie Earle, who were the LKSSAA and SWOSSAA mixed doubles champions finished 5th in the B Flight, and 13th overall in the province with a 5-3 record.

Kucera and Earle, who have played together since grade 10, and are both now senior students defeated Sarah Mitchell and Shawn Bowman (Eastview Barrie – GBSSAA), Helen Ng and Jasper Ho (UTS – TDCAA), Taylor Colangeli and Matt Thorpe (A.N. Myers S.S. – SOSSA), Kiersten Hillman and Chris Murphy (Bracebridge Muskoka Lakes – GBSSAA), and Joey Kuang and Jonathan Ho (Agincourt CI – TDSSAA). The duo suffered losses to Molan Ren and Jameson Weng (Bell – NCSSAA), Yuming Han and David Park (Sir John A MacDonald – CWOSSA), and Lisa Gearing and Danny Gearing (E.L. Crossley S.S. – SOSSA).

Christian Bechard, competing in boys singles, also finished with a 5-3 record, and was able to fight his way to a bronze medal in the C Flight, good for 26th overall provincially.

Bechard got out of the gate close, losing three straight matches to Wil Hausenblas (Elliot Lake S.S. – NOSSAA), Andre Genier (Nouveau Regard – NEOAA), and Jermaine St-Pierre (ESC Casselman – EOSSAA).

The multi-OFSAA medallist in volleyball, who is committed to playing OUA volleyball for Guelph, bounced back after his start to win five straight matches en route to the C Flight bronze medal in a game he had to defeat Jermaine St-Pierre after falling to him to start the tournament.

The CKSS Golden Hawks captured the team title at the LKSSAA South Badminton Finals Tuesday at the St. Clair Health Plex.

Leading the way for CKSS was Tess Scaman, who won the girls singles title. Scaman defeated UCC’s Grace Hiltz.

Josh Roy and Pierce Johnson also won the boys double title. Roy and Johnson beat Owen Dorssers and Cole McGregor of UCC in the final.

Other division winners Tuesday included Pain Court’s Mitchell Benn, who edged CKSS’ Austin Oulds in the boys singles final.

Jorja Paraskevopoulos and Brant Bagnell captured the mixed doubles division, beating UCC’s Chelsea Hartford and Jakob Wanger.

Finally, Madeleine Myers and Danielle Lucier of Pain Court defeated Abby Sluys and Ainsley McNamara of Chatham Christian in the girls doubles final.

The top 6 finishers from each category will advance to the LKSSAA final which will be held next Tuesday in Sarnia.

ESPC Tops Junior Badminton

The ESPC Patriotes of Pain Court dominated the LKSSAA South Badminton tournament, capturing the overall team title in commanding fashion, by winning four of the five divisions.

In girls singles, ESPC’s Rachel Benn swept her way through the competition to win, defeating Alex Bechard of UCC in the final.

In girls doubles, the lone team from outside ESPC to win a division, was Keeley Taylor Noah and Corinna Van DenBoorn from Ridgetown, who defeated Pain Court’s Raine Avery and Autumn Hamilton in the final.

Cameron Wheeler and Aubrey Michaud of ESPC came back from the losing side of the bracket to defeat Ryan Baker and Natalie Little of JMSS in the mixed doubles championship.

In an all ESPC final, Joseph Zarebski and Dylan Schives eliminated Ryen Stevens and Aidan Lachine in the boys double final.

Finally, in boys singles, Pain Court’s Brenden Hunter edged Grant Spence from Chatham-Kent Secondary School in the championship game.

Chatham-Kent Secondary School ran away with the team title at the LKSSAA Senior badminton championships Tuesday in Sarnia.

CKSS finished the day with 42 points, 11 more than second place Pain Court (ESPC).

CKSS’ Pierce Johnson and Josh Roy continued their season dominance, this time needing to beat their teammates Trevor Everitt and Brad Paraskevopoulos in the championship game.

In girls singles, CKSS’ Eve Stokes fell in the final to Lambton-Central’s Marissa Meuller.

In the boys singles division, Pain Court’s Mitchell Benn defeated CKSS’ Austin Oulds in the championship match.

Girls doubles saw Pain Court’s Danielle Lucier and Madeline Myers defeat Chatham Christian’s Ainsley McNamara and Abby Sluys.

The mixed doubles division was the only category which did not feature a LKSSAA South school in the final.

The Junior LKSSAA badminton championships will be held Thursday at the St. Clair Health Plex in Chatham.

The top 6 finishers from both Junior and Senior will advance to SWOSSAA next week.

The Pain Court (ESPC) Patriotes won the overall team title at the LKSSAA Junior Badminton championships Thursday in Chatham. Pain Court took a whopping 53 points, almost double second place Chatham-Kent Secondary School who had 27.

ESPC’s Rachell Benn won the girls singles crown when her opponent in the final, Alex Bechard of UCC had to withdraw midway through their match due to injury.

Ryen Stevens and Aidan Lachine defeated Joe Zarebski and Dylan Schives, all of Pain Court in the boys double final.

Also winning from ESPC were Cameron Wheeler and Aubrey Michaud in the mixed doubles division, as they defeated Ryan Baker and Natalie Little from John McGregor.

In boys singles, Grant Spence of CKSS defeated Sarnia Northern’s Andrew Davies in an exciting two match final.

Finally, Kealy Taylor Noah and Corinna VandenBoorn of RIdgetown beat Raine Avey and Autumn Hamilton of ESPC in the girls doubles final.

The top 6 finishers from each division will compete in SWOSSAA next Thursday at the St. Clair Health Plex in Chatham.

The ESPC Patriotes of Pain Court were the school to beat Thursday at the SWOSSAA Junior badminton championships, capturing the SWOSSAA team title.

Pain Court finished the day with 24 team points, paced by two division championships.

Ryen Stevens and Aidan Lachine captured the boys doubles champioship, beating a team from Tecumseh Vista, who was second overall in the team totals.

Also beating a Tecumseh Vista team in the final were Pain Court’s Aubrey Michaud and Cameron Wheeler, who won the mixed doubles championship.

Pain Court also had two second place finishes, as Rachel Benn lost the girls singles final to a Windsor Massey player, while Rain Avey and Autumn Hamilton lost to Leamington’s top pair.

The top local finisher in the boys singles division was Chatham-Kent Secondary School’s Grant Spence, who finished third. Windsor Ste. Cecile’s Wilson Liu won the championship match.

There is no OFSAA for Junior players, meaning Thursday’s SWOSSAA concludes the Junior badminton season.

Badminton Season Rolling

The high school senior and junior badminton seasons are well underway in Chatham-Kent.

This week, the UCC Lancers hosted their annual senior badminton tournament.

Three UCC teams won divisions in their home tournament. Olivia Lozon, a grade 9, won the Senior girls singles final. In boys singles, UCC’s Dhairya Shah took top spot. Also, the girls doubles team of Grace Hiltz and Emma Demers finished first.

ESPC and CKSS also won divisions, as Hunter Henderson and Matt Gaudrault of ESPC won boys doubles, and CKSS’ Carson Lewis and Brooke MacKinnon won mixed doubles.

Last week at the CKSS junior tournament, ESPC athletes took all five divisions. In Boys Singles, Brendan Hunter took top spot, while Rachel Benn won girls singles. Hunter Henderson and Bailey Rolph won the boys doubles title, while Raine Avery and Micha Morriset won girls doubles. Finally, the mixed doubles champions were Chloe Stallaert and Jared Delaey.

The Junior badminton season continues tonight as ESPC hosts their junior tournament.

Badminton Finals This Week

The LKSSAA South badminton finals were held last week at the St. Clair Health Plex in Chatham with the top 6 advancing to this weeks LKSSAA championships facing top finishers from Lambton.

In the Junior finals, Ryan Baker of JMSS won the boys single crown, defeating Brandon Hunter of ESPC. Olivia Hunter of ESPC won the girls single crown, beating Camille Blain of CKSS.

CKSS’ Jessie McPherson and Kirby McKinnon won the girls double title, beating Reese Parks and Kate Balkwill of JMSS. Mathieu Gaudrault and Hunter Henderson of ESPC took the boys double title, winning over schoolmates Aidan Lachine and Ryen Stevens.

Finally in the mixed double, Rachel Carleton and Jake Reid of JMSS defeated Bailey Rolph and Courtney Legere of ESPC.

The Junior finals will take place Thursday.

The Senior championships are Tuesday.
